Back To School In Beckworth
International Women’s Day Tomorrow
Hello sisters, please join us on the morrow for International Women’s Day. Down the tools of oppression, free yourselves from the yoke of forced labour, and come together to empower all womanhood against the tyranny of penis-waving power mongers. At midday tomorrow join us online as we set off on a virtual march to the online scout hut where, at around 1pm, we will hear encouraging speeches from many prominent international female guest speakers. We’ve even got some strong women’s voices from overseas, hopefully including Oprah Winfrey‘s (real) sister Winny and our hypothetical sister formally known as Jordan, Kate Winslett. It’s down to us to make this a powerful women-only event not to be missed, so log on early. Yours Sylvie Stoke. Chair Lady. Beckworth WI

Double Celebration In Beckworth, Infection Rates Drop & It’s World Book Day
Vaccine & reading news news just in… Good news at last after a very bleak 12 months. Beckworth’s local hospital trust has just announced via TikTok that locally new Covid infections rate have probably dropped by at least 13% in the last four weeks and hospital admissions by a similar amount in the last week or so… The announcement was made by head of A&E Dr Raj Mombai who had initially dressed as Dr Jekyll in celebration of World Book day, and then reappeared to show himself giving vaccines to the over 60s whilst dressed as Mr Hyde. Well done to Dr Raj and all the NHS staff (especially those who wore fancy dress today). Christine Batley. Deputy Chief Covid 19 Correspondent. Fishfinger Fire Day… Two Days Ago (oops)
Hello. And apologies for the lateness of my post, blame it on post-vaccine memory loss which meant I forgot what day, or week, it was. I have been feeling two cod-sticks short of a sandwich but its worth it! Anyway, as you will doubtless know Thursday just gone was a very important day in the Beckworth calendar, Fishfinger Fire Day.
Had I remembered I would have asked all to once again resurrect a celebration whereby all residents wear the frozen foodstuff in their button holes, just as was done ritually until the 1930s. As taught nationally it was around 350 years ago, in 1578, that Beckworth almost lost it’s centuries-old fishfinger industry in a fire that ravaged the town. Carelessly started by a baker making the signature fluorescent orange breadcrumbs the ensuing blaze robbed locals of their favourite fish diet for months to come. This, the town’s primary industry, could have died out altogether if it wasn’t for the actions of a young navy officer home on leave. Lieutenant Len BirdsEye noticed smoke coming from the drunk bakers shop and quickly extinguished the fire within using his naval ration flask of rum he kept in a hip flask. In honour him of saving the last few fishfingers and the secret recipe, he was briefly made Mayor of the town, promoted to captain and had his name and picture added to all Beckworth’s future made fish fingers.
Thanks, Bill Christchurch. Beckworth Historical Society.

Wear A Plume In Your Hat Online This Weekend
Hello my flock. I hope you’re surviving lockdown #3 and not going out, except to stock up on snacks and alcohol. I myself am getting through the restrictions thanks to my lodger and our daily rituals. In fact we got so carried away with Thursday nights online “Shed Your Sins With Gin” that we slept through yesterday and missed the Feast of St Norris. Church Warden Noddy Holder we hold our annual memorial service tomorrow via zoom at 11ish, and all religious denominations are welcome as St Norris is venerated by many faiths. Why not wear a feather in your hat this weekend to celebrate his kind deeds to birds and his invention of the carrier pigeon back in the 15th century. And in his honour remember “we should cast aside carnal thoughts by wearing feathers atop our sinful bodies and by clearing up bird sh*t. With our hands” So see you online tomorrow morning sporting your finest plumage. God Bless You and Norris. Cyril Knutsford, Vicar, Beckworth St Faiths
